MGMS SCHOLARSHIP
The Michigan Gem and Mineral Society is dedicated to furthering the
education of our youth. We would like to award two scholarships
($500.00 each) to graduating seniors from Jackson County High
Schools. It is our intention to continue to provide these
scholarships in future years.
This scholarship is open to graduating seniors from Jackson County,
Michigan only, and the funds must be used for post high school
education. For seniors graduating in 2012, there are two (2) - $500.00
scholarships for study in the areas of Earth Sciences and Lapidary Arts.
Membership in the MGMS is encouraged but not required.
The application must be postmarked by
February 14, 2012.
These Earth Science fields include, but are not strictly limited to
studies in Geology, Lapidary Arts, and Mineralogy. Additional areas
in the broad field of Earth Sciences that will also be considered
include, but are not limited to: Geology, GeoPhysics, Oceanography,
Marine Biology, Forensics, Green Technologies, Astronomy,
Meteorology, Chemistry, Metal Smithing, Gemology, Jewelry making,
Metallurgy, or others in the Earth Science field.
Related fields where the student’s essay (see below) successfully
makes a case for the area of study’s connection to Earth Science
will be considered. Students interested in Teaching, (Including
Elementary Education and Art), Engineering, Health Care, or Research
and Technology, and are seeking degrees,
training, or certification in the any of the above fields,
are invited to apply.
The scholarship focuses on the following criteria:
● Academic – minimum 2.8 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
● Community Service
● Financial Need
● At least 2 letters of recommendation (Only one of them may be a family
member)
● Resident of Jackson County
● 250-word essay
The 250-word essay must address the following criteria:
● Career and Educational Goals
● Commitment to your area of interest in the Earth Sciences or how
geology, weather, the environment, and/or Lapidary Arts will affect
what you do in your field
Your completed application must include the
application form,
letters of recommendation, and your essay. Staple all pages together. Applications to be
postmarked by
February 14, 2012 and sent to:

The Michigan Gem and Mineral Society’s Officers, and three
scholarship committee members that are selected by the President
will select the winners of these scholarships. If no applicant is
considered acceptable, the scholarships will be retained by the
Michigan Gem and Mineral Society.
Qualified recipients will be notified by March 1, 2012, and awards
may be given at Senior Honors night, or during our 50th Annual Gem
and Mineral Show, held at the Jackson County Fairground Events
Building on March 16th, 17th, and 18th, 2012, or in person.
Scholarships will be awarded before the end of the 2011 – 2012 school
year. Award recipients will be asked to provide a picture that may be
used for publicity purposes. This is not a
requirement.
